Drainage Problems: The Silent Pavement Killer

Water is the single greatest enemy of asphalt. Recognizing and fixing drainage problems early is the best long-term maintenance investment.

Drainage Problems: The Silent Pavement Killer

Why Water Matters

Water above the pavement accelerates oxidation and freeze-thaw damage. Water beneath the pavement softens the subgrade and destroys load-bearing capacity. Every major pavement failure has a water component somewhere in its history.

Signs of Drainage Failure

  • Standing water more than 24 hours after rain
  • Birdbaths that hold puddles
  • Mud lines or silt trails on the surface
  • Sinkholes near catch basins
  • Alligator cracking in low areas
  • Efflorescence or white staining at concrete edges

Common Causes

  • Original grading too flat
  • Settlement over time
  • Blocked catch basins
  • Overloaded storm drain systems
  • Landscape islands directing water onto pavement
  • Curb and gutter separation

Repair Options

  • Surface milling to correct minor birdbaths
  • Infrared repair for shallow low spots
  • Full-depth patch when the base is compromised
  • New catch basins where none exist
  • Curb repair to restore water channels
  • Regrading for chronic drainage failures
  • French drains or subsurface drainage on wet sites

Prevention

  • Design positive slope into every new lot (1% to 2% minimum)
  • Include catch basins wherever slopes converge
  • Keep landscape irrigation off pavement
  • Sweep catch basin grates seasonally
  • Address minor settlement before it channels water

When To Bring Us In

If you see standing water after moderate rain, or any new alligator cracking in a low area, an on-site assessment is warranted. Drainage problems compound quickly. The earlier they are corrected, the less expensive the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix drainage without repaving?

Sometimes — targeted infrared or milling can correct minor low spots. Larger problems require broader work.

What about French drains?

On wet sites with high groundwater, subsurface drainage is often the correct solution.

Who is responsible for stormwater compliance?

Property owners bear stormwater responsibility, typically enforced by county or municipal code.
