The Pavement You Never See

Every asphalt pavement is only as strong as the base beneath it. You cannot see the base once the surface is laid, and that is exactly why cutting corners here is so tempting — and so damaging.

At Quality Paving, base preparation is where we spend the most time and the most attention. It is also where most premature failures we are called to repair originated.

What Base Preparation Actually Involves

  1. Site assessment — soil type, existing grades, drainage paths
  2. Excavation and shaping — removing unsuitable material and cutting to design elevation
  3. Subgrade compaction — proof-rolling to identify soft spots
  4. Aggregate placement — spreading and grading crushed stone in controlled lifts
  5. Base compaction — reaching 95%+ density with vibratory rollers
  6. Final grade check — verifying slopes and cross-fall before paving

Skipping any of these steps buys short-term savings and long-term problems.

Drainage Is Base Preparation

Water is the single greatest enemy of asphalt pavement. Water in the subgrade softens soil. Water on the surface accelerates oxidation. Water in cracks freezes, expands, and pries the pavement apart.

A properly prepared base sheds water in every direction. Slopes are engineered — never accidental. Low spots and birdbaths are corrected before paving, not after.

The Middle Georgia Soil Reality

Our region's red clay soils expand and shrink with moisture. A base built on unstabilized clay will telegraph its movement into the pavement within a few seasons. Where clay is present, we use additional stone thickness, geotextile fabric, or lime stabilization to isolate the pavement from the clay.

Warning Signs of a Bad Base

  • Rippling, pumping, or standing water within a year of installation
  • Alligator cracking that appears in patches (not from surface aging)
  • Settlement at seams, catch basins, or transitions
  • Rutting under truck traffic

None of these are asphalt problems. They are base problems dressed up as asphalt problems.

What To Look For In a Proposal

A trustworthy proposal specifies base thickness, aggregate type, compaction target, and drainage approach. Vague language ("adequate base," "proper prep") is a red flag. Ask for the numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should the base be?

4 inches is minimum for a residential driveway; 6 to 8 inches is standard for commercial lots. Poor soils require more.

Does geotextile fabric make a difference?

On soft or clay-heavy subgrades, yes — it separates the aggregate from the underlying soil and prevents pumping.

Can a bad base be fixed later?

Only by removing the asphalt and rebuilding. That is why doing it right the first time is always cheaper.
