The Freeze-Thaw Cycle
Water enters cracks. Overnight temperatures drop below freezing. Water expands about 9% as it freezes. Ice pries the crack walls apart. Days warm. Ice melts. Now the crack is wider. Repeat over a season and small cracks grow into serious ones — and the base beneath is being saturated the entire time.
Middle Georgia sees dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter, even if we do not experience prolonged deep freeze. The damage adds up.
What Winter Amplifies
- Existing unsealed cracks widen faster than any other time of year
- Base water content rises, softening the subgrade
- Potholes form as saturated base fails under traffic
- Sealcoated surfaces are relatively protected — bare pavement suffers most
Prevention
- Seal all cracks before winter. October is the last practical window.
- Verify drainage. Standing water becomes a freeze event. Fix low spots before winter.
- Sealcoat within cycle. A dark, sealed surface sheds water and warms faster.
- De-ice responsibly. Rock salt and calcium chloride are hard on sealcoat over time. Use sand where possible.
- Sweep in late fall. Debris holds moisture against the pavement.
Spring Response
The first month of spring is the most productive maintenance window of the year. Any crack that opened over winter should be sealed before it fills with water in April rains. Any pothole that appeared during freeze should be patched before it grows.
