Milling — cold-plane surface removal of existing asphalt — is what separates a professional overlay from a lazy paint-job resurface. Milling removes the top 1"–2" of failed or oxidized surface course, preserves the existing drainage grades, and produces a rough, keyed surface that a fresh overlay bonds to permanently. Without milling, an overlay can raise pavement grades above door thresholds, above curb tops, and above catch-basin rings — creating drainage failures where none existed before.
We mill for three main reasons. First, overlay preparation on commercial lots: mill 1.5", then place 1.5" of fresh surface course, and the finished elevation matches the surrounding curbs, thresholds and drainage structures exactly. Second, elevation correction at problem transitions: doors, drive-in bays, or garage entries where prior overlays raised the surface into a scrape hazard. Third, full-depth prep: milling ahead of a base repair or full-depth replacement so demolition is clean and controlled.
Our cold-plane mills produce Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), which is a legitimately valuable byproduct — RAP is recycled into new hot-mix asphalt across Georgia, meaning every milling job contributes to lower material cost on the next resurface. We haul RAP to certified recycling yards; we don't landfill sound asphalt.
Milling scope matters. Depth, width and edge treatment (butt joint vs. taper) all need to be specified before the mill arrives, and the mill operator's finish determines how well the overlay lays down on top. We plan every milling job on paper before the machine moves.
