Speed bumps, speed humps and speed tables are three different traffic-calming devices with three different design targets. A speed bump is a short, sharp rise (typically 3–6 inches high, 6–12 inches wide, designed for 5 MPH target speed) used in parking lots. A speed hump is a longer, gentler rise (3–4 inches high, 12–14 feet wide, 15–20 MPH target) used on private roads and long drives. A speed table is a longer flat-top hump (often used at pedestrian crossings, designed for 25–30 MPH). Using the wrong device for the wrong site is why some speed bumps damage vehicles and others get ignored.
We install all three profiles in asphalt (integral with the pavement, most permanent), rubber (bolt-down, removable for utility or emergency access), or concrete (heavy-duty, industrial). Asphalt is our most common install because it's permanent, follows the pavement's condition, and blends with the lot. Rubber is preferred where the customer wants removability or where an existing lot doesn't warrant asphalt work.
Every speed bump install includes proper approach markings and signage. Yellow paint on the bump body, chevron markings on the approach pavement, and W17-1 signage (with speed advisory) at approach distances that give drivers time to slow. Missing signage and markings are the top reason speed bumps become vehicle-damage liability.
Placement matters, too. Speed bumps close to intersections or curb returns don't slow traffic — they surprise it. We evaluate site geometry, sight distance, and approach speed on every install and recommend placement that actually reduces speeds without creating hazards.
