What Speed Bumps Really Involves

Speed bumps, speed humps and speed tables are three different traffic-calming devices with three different design targets. A speed bump is a short, sharp rise (typically 3–6 inches high, 6–12 inches wide, designed for 5 MPH target speed) used in parking lots. A speed hump is a longer, gentler rise (3–4 inches high, 12–14 feet wide, 15–20 MPH target) used on private roads and long drives. A speed table is a longer flat-top hump (often used at pedestrian crossings, designed for 25–30 MPH). Using the wrong device for the wrong site is why some speed bumps damage vehicles and others get ignored.

We install all three profiles in asphalt (integral with the pavement, most permanent), rubber (bolt-down, removable for utility or emergency access), or concrete (heavy-duty, industrial). Asphalt is our most common install because it's permanent, follows the pavement's condition, and blends with the lot. Rubber is preferred where the customer wants removability or where an existing lot doesn't warrant asphalt work.

Every speed bump install includes proper approach markings and signage. Yellow paint on the bump body, chevron markings on the approach pavement, and W17-1 signage (with speed advisory) at approach distances that give drivers time to slow. Missing signage and markings are the top reason speed bumps become vehicle-damage liability.

Placement matters, too. Speed bumps close to intersections or curb returns don't slow traffic — they surprise it. We evaluate site geometry, sight distance, and approach speed on every install and recommend placement that actually reduces speeds without creating hazards.

How We Deliver Speed Bumps

    Traffic Study

    We evaluate approach speeds, sight lines, and site geometry, then recommend bump/hump/table profile, placement and count.

  2. 02

    Layout & Marking

    Placement chalked with proper approach spacing from intersections and curb returns; signage locations identified.

  3. 03

    Bump Install

    Asphalt bumps formed and hand-placed with a small paver or hand-lute, compacted with a plate compactor. Rubber bumps bolted down with proper anchors. Concrete bumps formed, poured and finished.

  4. 04

    Markings

    Yellow body paint and approach chevron markings applied with commercial traffic paint.

  5. 05

    Signage

    W17-1 speed bump advisory signs installed at proper approach distances and mounting heights.

  6. 06

    Verification

    We watch traffic at completion, confirm the bump is slowing speeds without creating hazards, and adjust markings if needed.

Questions About Speed Bumps

Speed bump or speed hump?

Parking lots and low-speed environments (5 MPH target) get bumps. Private roads and longer drives (15–20 MPH target) get humps. Pedestrian crossings often get speed tables (25–30 MPH target).

Asphalt, rubber, or concrete?

Asphalt is permanent, blends with the lot, and is the most common install. Rubber is removable and preferred where utility access, snow plowing, or emergency access requires it. Concrete is for industrial or heavy-duty applications.

How many bumps do I need?

Depends on drive length and approach speed. A rule of thumb: bumps or humps every 200–400 feet on longer drives to maintain target speed between devices.

Are speed bumps ADA-compliant?

Speed bumps and humps are not on ADA accessible routes and don't need to meet ADA slope. Speed tables at pedestrian crossings do have ADA implications and we install those with proper geometry.

Will speed bumps damage cars?

Correctly designed and marked bumps don't damage vehicles driven at the intended target speed. Damage happens when bumps are the wrong profile, unmarked, or hit at highway speed.

Can speed bumps be added later to an existing lot?

Yes. Asphalt bumps can be added to any existing asphalt surface with proper tack coat. Rubber bumps bolt onto any surface.

Maintenance Tips For Speed Bumps

  • Repaint speed bump markings on the same schedule as your lot striping — faded bumps become invisible hazards.
  • Replace missing or damaged signage immediately; a bump without warning signage is a liability event.
  • Inspect asphalt bumps annually for cracking or shoving; a bump that's deteriorating loses its profile and its function.
  • Recheck placement if traffic patterns change (new tenant, changed entrance, drive-thru added) — bumps need to be where the speeds are.
  • Consider seasonal removal of rubber bumps in snow-plow country (not usually a concern in Middle Georgia).
