What Bollard Installation Really Involves

Bollards do one job: stop a vehicle before it reaches something that needs protecting. Storefronts, drive-thru order stations, propane cages, HVAC condensers, gas meters, dumpster corrals, fuel islands, and pedestrian walkway edges all need bollard protection — and every one of those locations has a bollard specification appropriate to it. The wrong bollard, or a bollard set improperly, isn't protection; it's decoration that hides the risk.

Standard practice for storefront protection is a 4"–6" schedule-40 or schedule-80 steel pipe bollard, concrete-filled, set in a footing of 3'–4' depth and 12"–18" diameter, projecting 36"–42" above finished grade. Spacing between bollards is typically 4'–5' on center to prevent vehicle passage while allowing pedestrian and cart access. That's the baseline; site-specific risk (loading dock, drive-thru, fuel canopy) may call for larger pipe, deeper footings, or ram-rated engineered bollards.

Ram-rated bollards are engineered and tested to stop a specific vehicle at a specific speed (K4, K8, K12 ratings, or ASTM M30/M50/M60). Federal buildings, sensitive infrastructure, and high-risk retail locations sometimes require these. We install both standard and ram-rated bollards, and we're clear on the site walk which is appropriate for your risk level.

Aesthetics matter too. Bollards can be painted safety-yellow (industrial standard) or bronze/black (retail-appropriate), sleeved with plastic covers for a finished look, or replaced with decorative cast bollards where site design calls for it. We handle plain-pipe industrial installs and finished-retail installs with equal care.

How We Deliver Bollard Installation

    Risk & Spec Review

    We walk the site, identify what's being protected, evaluate approach angles and speeds, and recommend bollard type, size, spacing and footing depth.

  2. 02

    Utility Locate

    Before any digging, we call 811 and mark utilities. Bollard footings often go through sub-grade where utilities live.

  3. 03

    Excavation

    Auger or hand-dig footings to specified depth and diameter.

  4. 04

    Pipe Setting

    Bollards set plumb in fresh concrete, filled with concrete internally, and cured. Position and height verified before concrete sets.

  5. 05

    Finish & Paint

    Concrete finished at grade, bollard painted or sleeved to spec, hazard tape or reflective banding applied if required.

  6. 06

    Reinstate Surface

    Adjacent asphalt or concrete restored around each bollard so the finished surface drains properly.

Questions About Bollard Installation

How deep do bollards need to be set?

For standard storefront protection, 3'–4' deep and 12"–18" diameter concrete footings. Ram-rated bollards go deeper and follow engineered specs specific to their rating.

Bollard spacing at storefronts?

4'–5' on center is standard — close enough to prevent vehicle passage, wide enough for pedestrians, carts and wheelchairs. ADA-compliant clear pedestrian widths must be preserved on any accessible route.

Steel pipe vs. ram-rated?

Standard steel pipe bollards protect against low-speed accidental impact — a car pulling forward instead of reverse. Ram-rated bollards are engineered to stop a vehicle at a target speed (K4/K8/K12 or M30/M50/M60) and are used where deliberate ramming is a real threat.

Can bollards be added to existing pavement?

Yes. We core or saw-cut the pavement, excavate the footing, set the bollard, pour concrete, and restore the surface around the bollard.

How often should bollards be repainted or resleeved?

Painted bollards typically want a fresh coat every 2–3 years or when visible fade or rust appears. Plastic sleeves last 5–10 years before UV degradation warrants replacement.

Do you install decorative bollards?

Yes — cast iron and cast aluminum decorative bollards are installed similarly to steel pipe bollards, with attention to alignment and grade for aesthetic consistency.

Maintenance Tips For Bollard Installation

  • Inspect bollards annually for base heave, damaged sleeves, or missing reflective tape.
  • Repaint yellow bollards on a 2–3 year cycle; faded yellow is nearly as invisible as no bollard.
  • Replace impact-damaged bollards promptly — a leaning or cracked bollard has failed even if it's still standing.
  • Add bollards to any site change that puts a new risk area near a drive lane (new drive-thru window, new HVAC install, new gas cage).
  • Consider bollard covers on new installs for lower repaint cost and consistent color over time.
