Bollards do one job: stop a vehicle before it reaches something that needs protecting. Storefronts, drive-thru order stations, propane cages, HVAC condensers, gas meters, dumpster corrals, fuel islands, and pedestrian walkway edges all need bollard protection — and every one of those locations has a bollard specification appropriate to it. The wrong bollard, or a bollard set improperly, isn't protection; it's decoration that hides the risk.
Standard practice for storefront protection is a 4"–6" schedule-40 or schedule-80 steel pipe bollard, concrete-filled, set in a footing of 3'–4' depth and 12"–18" diameter, projecting 36"–42" above finished grade. Spacing between bollards is typically 4'–5' on center to prevent vehicle passage while allowing pedestrian and cart access. That's the baseline; site-specific risk (loading dock, drive-thru, fuel canopy) may call for larger pipe, deeper footings, or ram-rated engineered bollards.
Ram-rated bollards are engineered and tested to stop a specific vehicle at a specific speed (K4, K8, K12 ratings, or ASTM M30/M50/M60). Federal buildings, sensitive infrastructure, and high-risk retail locations sometimes require these. We install both standard and ram-rated bollards, and we're clear on the site walk which is appropriate for your risk level.
Aesthetics matter too. Bollards can be painted safety-yellow (industrial standard) or bronze/black (retail-appropriate), sleeved with plastic covers for a finished look, or replaced with decorative cast bollards where site design calls for it.
