Overview

What Drainage Solutions Really Involves

Water is the single biggest cause of pavement failure — and standing water is the smoking-gun symptom. If a lot has puddles that don't drain within an hour of a rainstorm, the pavement over that area is being destroyed twice as fast as pavement that sheds water properly. Repaving without solving the drainage is throwing money at symptoms. Drainage first, pavement second.

We install and repair the whole family of surface drainage structures: trench drains at loading docks and where sheet flow crosses the pavement, area drains and catch basins at low points, culverts under driveways and access roads, curb inlets tied into existing storm systems, and yard drains for problem residential areas. We also handle sub-drain (French drain) work where sub-grade saturation is the underlying issue.

Beyond structures, drainage often comes down to grade. A lot that was built with adequate slope can lose it over time — settlement, overlays that stacked up, curbs that moved. Regrading a problem area (mill, correct grade, overlay) sends water where it needs to go without new drainage infrastructure. We evaluate every drainage problem for both structural and grade fixes and quote whichever solves the problem for the lowest total cost.

Timing drainage work with paving is usually the smart move. When we're already mobilized with a mill and paver, adding a catch basin or a regrade to the scope is dramatically cheaper than a separate drainage mobilization later. Any lot that's on the schedule for a resurface should have a drainage review as part of the site walk.

Middle Georgia Context

Middle Georgia weather, drainage patterns, traffic, and site conditions can all affect asphalt performance. Quality Paving evaluates each property individually and recommends scope based on observed conditions, intended use, materials, drainage, and scheduling needs rather than making predictive pavement-life promises.

Our Process

How We Deliver Drainage Solutions

  1. 01

    Site Water Study

We walk the site during or immediately after rain (when possible), photograph standing water, trace flow paths, and identify low points and blocked structures.

  2. 02

    Solution Design

Structural fixes (new drains, culverts, basins), grade fixes (regrade a problem area), or a combination — with pros, cons and cost for each option.

  3. 03

    Excavation & Structure Install

Cut, excavate, install pre-cast or cast-in-place structures, tie into existing storm system where present, and backfill to grade with compacted stone.

  4. 04

    Pipe & Regrade Work

Storm pipe placed to proper slope, bedding and cover, culverts set with correct headwall and outlet protection, problem areas regraded to shed water.

  5. 05

    Pavement Restoration

Any pavement disturbed by drainage work is patched or overlaid so the finished surface matches surrounding grade and drains as designed.

  6. 06

    Verification

We flush-test or watch the first rain and confirm water goes where the design intended. Adjustments if any before final sign-off.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Drainage Solutions

Why does my lot puddle in the same spots?

Either the surface grade is wrong (settled, over-paved, or built flat), or the drainage structure is missing, blocked, or too small. Both are fixable, but the fix depends on the cause.

Can drainage be added to an existing lot?

Yes — trench drains, catch basins, and area drains are all retro-fit-able. We saw-cut the pavement, install the structure, tie into an outlet, and patch the pavement back to grade.

Culvert or trench drain — which do I need?

Culverts carry water under a pavement crossing (a driveway crossing a swale, for example). Trench drains capture surface sheet flow across a pavement surface (at a dock, at a garage entry). Different problems, different solutions.

How deep should a French drain be?

Sub-drain depth depends on the water table and the elevation of the outlet. Typically 24"–36" for sub-grade drainage under a lot. We size based on soil boring or site inspection.

Can I sealcoat a lot with drainage problems?

You can, but the sealer over standing-water areas will fail faster than the rest of the lot. Fixing the drainage first extends the sealcoat's return on investment.

Do you handle stormwater compliance?

For basic on-site drainage work, yes. For engineered stormwater management (retention/detention pond design, NPDES permits) we coordinate with a civil engineer or existing site plan.

Maintenance Tips For Drainage Solutions

  • Clean every catch basin and trench drain grate annually before hurricane season — leaves and debris block flow silently.
  • Photograph the lot after a heavy rain every year; changes in puddle location and size are early warnings.
  • Add drainage review to any resurface site walk — it's the cheapest time to add drains.
  • Keep landscaping and mulch away from pavement edges; runoff carries mulch straight into catch basins.
  • Fix broken curb sections promptly — a broken curb turns a controlled drainage plan into a random one.
